How to Network Your Database

There are several reasons you might want to put your Espion database on your network:

  • to allow multiple Espion systems to share a single database
  • to take advantage of your server's automatic backup features
  • to allow an analysis machine in your office to connect to the system's database, so you can access the database and analyze tests while the system is in use

To network your database:

  1. Choose where you want the database to reside - on an acquisition machine's computer or on a server. The machine with the database on it is called the server and the other, accessing computer(s) is called the client.

  2. Assuming you want another computer to be the server, copy the database from the Espion computer to the server e.g to a directory called \DATABASES\ESPION.FDB

    Databases by default are located in C:\Multifocal\Databases (for V6 systems) or C:\Espion V5\Databases (for V5 systems).

  3. If you have multiple databases from multiple machines you wish to consolidate, do that now

    • To consolidate the databases, first you'll want to back both databases up.

    • Pick one of the databases to become the host database. Go to the other database and        press Start. From the patient page, press Transfer. Select ALL PATIENTS, make sure that INCLUDE TESTS is turned ON and Patient Anonymity is turned OFF. Press OUTPUT FILE.

    • Navigate to the Desktop using the little folder icon in the lower left and press the Transfer button at top left.

    • If there are protocols that need to be included that don't have any tests associated with them as well, you can grab them as well - press Start, then Protocols, press Transfer and select ALL PROTOCOLS. Output file / place it on the Desktop as well. You don't have to change the filename - when you press Transfer you can choose to APPEND the file to the existing one, glomming all the data together. Copy that file to an external drive or shared network drive - somewhere where the host machine can see it. Repeat for as many databases you want to consolidate into one.

    • Return to the host database machine and press Database Center, then Transfer. Navigate to and select the file we output from the other machine and press Transfer In. Repeat until all records are present in the master database.

  4. You must now install firebird database server software onto the new computer. You can find a setup file for Firebird in the location C:\Multifocal\Firebird and Utilities\Firebird*.exe. If installing Firebird 2.0, you will need to install Firebird as an APPLICATION and not a service. If installing Firebird 2.5, it will need to be installed as a SERVICE and not an application.

  5. TCP/IP port 3050 must be open on all computers/servers (it is by default).

  6. Check that the acquisition computer(s) can now see the server computer on the network and vice versa (using Windows tools). The server machine must have a static IP address.

  7. Finally run the Espion software on the client and go to Database center. Now connect to the database on the server e.g\multifocal\databases\espion.fdb where c:\multifocal\databases\espion.fdb is where the database is stored on the server and is the address of the server computer. Press Connect to connect to the database, then the Start button - you should be taken to the database, now hosted on the server.


You can type the directory name directly into the area (highlighted in yellow below) directly below "File Name"
